Headaches, Migraines, and Neck Tension: Can Chiropractic Care Help?

Headaches are common, but they shouldn't be something you simply accept as part of everyday life.

Many people in South Surrey and White Rock regularly experience headaches, migraines, neck tension, or upper back stiffness. Some rely on medication, some stretch, some book regular massages, and others simply push through the discomfort.

Sometimes those strategies help.

But when the same headaches keep returning week after week, it's worth asking a different question:

Why is this happening in the first place?

At Genuine Athletics, we take a movement-based approach to assessing headaches. While not every headache originates from the neck or spine, many headache patterns are influenced by neck tension, poor movement mechanics, posture, stress, training load, or upper back stiffness.

Understanding the source is often the first step toward lasting relief.

Not All Headaches Are Created Equal

The term "headache" covers a wide range of conditions.

Some headaches are primarily tension-related.

Others originate from the neck.

Some are migraines.

Others may be linked to stress, sleep quality, hydration, hormones, jaw tension, vision changes, or medical conditions.

That is why a proper assessment matters.

A headache that begins at the base of the skull and travels toward the forehead is very different from a migraine accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity, or visual disturbances.

The goal isn't to treat every headache the same way.

The goal is to identify the underlying pattern and determine whether the neck, upper back, ribs, posture, or movement habits are contributing factors.

Neck-Related Headaches
One of the most common headache patterns we see in active adults, athletes, and desk workers is a cervicogenic headache, often referred to as a neck-related headache.

These headaches can develop when the joints, muscles, and surrounding tissues of the neck and upper back become irritated, stiff, or overloaded.

Common symptoms include:

Pain beginning at the base of the skull
Headache primarily on one side
Tightness through the neck and upper traps
Headaches that worsen with prolonged sitting or certain neck positions
Pain after driving, desk work, lifting, or training
Reduced neck mobility or upper back stiffness
When the neck and upper back are not moving efficiently, surrounding muscles often compensate. Over time, this increased tension can contribute to recurring headaches.

What About Migraines?
Migraines are different.

A migraine is a neurological condition, not simply a tight muscle or stiff joint.

Symptoms can include:

Throbbing or pulsating head pain
Nausea or vomiting
Sensitivity to light
Sensitivity to sound
Visual disturbances or aura
Significant disruption to daily activities
It is important to be clear:

Chiropractic care should not be presented as a cure for migraines.

Current research remains inconclusive regarding the effectiveness of spinal manipulation as a primary treatment for migraine.

However, many migraine sufferers also experience neck pain, upper back stiffness, jaw tension, poor posture, or movement restrictions.

In these cases, chiropractic care may play a supportive role by helping improve mobility, reduce mechanical stress, and address contributing musculoskeletal factors that may increase overall symptom burden.

For migraine sufferers, chiropractic care is best viewed as one component of a comprehensive healthcare approach rather than a standalone solution.

Why the Neck and Upper Back Matter
Your head sits on top of your neck all day.

If your neck, upper back, rib cage, and surrounding muscles are not functioning efficiently, the body often compensates by creating tension elsewhere.

This can contribute to discomfort through the:

Base of the skull
Upper neck
Jaw
Temples
Upper traps
Shoulder blades
Mid-back
This is especially common among people who:

Work at a desk
Drive for long periods
Train regularly
Lift weights
Play sports
Spend hours looking down at phones or screens
A stiff thoracic spine can also force the neck to work harder than it should.

When the upper back loses mobility, the neck and shoulders often absorb the extra stress.

This is why treating only the painful area doesn't always solve the problem.

Headaches in Athletes and Active Adults
At Genuine Athletics, we frequently work with athletes and active individuals whose headaches are connected to training demands and recovery habits.

Common contributors include:

Heavy lifting
Overhead pressing
Contact sports
Hockey, golf, tennis, and rotational sports
Long workdays followed by hard training sessions
Poor recovery
Jaw clenching during lifts
Limited thoracic mobility
Rib cage stiffness
Shoulder dysfunction
In many cases, these headaches are not random.

They are signals that the neck, upper back, and surrounding structures may be handling more stress than they are prepared for.

How Chiropractic Care May Help
Effective chiropractic care should be individualized.

At Genuine Athletics, the goal is not simply to adjust a joint and hope symptoms disappear.

We assess how the neck, upper back, ribs, shoulders, breathing mechanics, and movement patterns work together.

When appropriate, treatment may include:

Comprehensive movement assessment
Chiropractic adjustments
Thoracic spine and rib mobility work
Soft tissue therapy
Postural correction strategies
Shoulder blade control exercises
Strength and mobility programming
Breathing and rib cage mechanics
Training modifications
For many people, successful outcomes come from combining improved mobility, better movement patterns, increased strength, and smarter load management.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?
Most headaches are not medical emergencies, but some require immediate evaluation.

Seek urgent medical care if you experience:

A sudden severe headache unlike anything you've felt before
A headache following trauma
Weakness, numbness, vision changes, or confusion
Fever with a stiff neck
Difficulty speaking
Seizures
Fainting
Rapidly worsening symptoms
A new headache pattern after age 50
A thorough assessment should always determine whether conservative care is appropriate or whether medical referral is necessary.

Chiropractic Care for Headaches in South Surrey and White Rock
If recurring headaches, migraines, neck tension, or upper back stiffness are affecting your quality of life, training, work, or performance, it may be time to look beyond the symptoms themselves.

At Genuine Athletics, we take a movement-focused approach to understanding why headaches occur.

Rather than focusing solely on where the pain is felt, we assess how your neck, spine, ribs, shoulders, posture, and daily habits may be contributing to the problem.

For some people, relief comes from improving neck mobility.

For others, it comes from restoring upper back function, improving posture, modifying training habits, or reducing unnecessary stress on the body.

Headaches can be complex.

But when the neck and upper back are contributing to the problem, they deserve to be part of the solution.

Move Better. Load Better. Perform Better.
